How to prepare for your getaway
Mountains and Lake in Glenorchy

Our tips and tricks on how to get ready for your getaway

Ka Pai for deciding to join us on this adventure!

We want you to make the most of your time with us, so if you’re joining us for one of our more active getaways, we recommend you do a little bit of ‘hiking homework’ before you arrive. This includes making sure you have everything you need before you get here and ensuring you’re comfortable with the amount of walking we’ll be doing on some of our trips.

What should I bring?

A smile.

Yeah, but what else?

We recommend trying to have everything in this list for the walks, no matter what time of year you’ll be joining us. It’s OK if you can’t get everything on the list yourself - we have options here for you!

·      Hiking pack 25 - 30L (day pack) with waterproof cover

·      Waterproof pack liner / Dry bags

·      Hiking boots / Trail runners

·      Merino thermal layers

·      Warm layer / fleece

·      Waterproof rain jacket

·      Hiking shorts / pants / leggings

·      Gloves

·      Beanie / Buff

·      Merino socks

·      Sunhat / Sunglasses

·      Hand sanitiser

 Optional:

·      Camera

·      Hiking poles

·      Gaiters

·      Rain pants

And remember to bring everything else you’ll need to relax in the evenings at Camp Glenorchy Eco Lodge after our walks. We also have laundry facilities so you can always have fresh items to wear.

Ok, I think I have everything, but how fit do I need to be?

It’s our job to make sure you’re comfortable and capable of anything we tackle, so don’t worry, you don’t need to be an ultra-marathon athlete to enjoy your time with us! We always cater the getaway to you personally and make sure you’re getting a challenging, yet rewarding experience, at your own fitness level. Our guides are experts and will support you throughout your entire time with us.

The most important thing is that you don’t feel like you need to go through a boot camp to be fit enough to get here. We just suggest you work on some enjoyable habits that help to encourage a healthy lifestyle of getting out in nature, not as a one-off training regime for the getaway.

If you’d like some help building up your fitness, we’ve listed a few healthy habits to give you a hand with your preparation:

We suggest you’re comfortable walking up to 10km over a variety of terrain by the time you get here. Start getting out and about a couple of months before your getaway. If you don’t have a couple of months, don’t worry, go out for a walk today! Every little bit of preparation will help you get the most out of this experience. The easiest thing to do is start in your neighbourhood - check the backyard is in order and then work up to some local walking trails.

It’s also worth using the equipment you’re planning to bring before you get here.

Walk int he boots you plan to wear –

The best way to avoid blisters on your getaway is to break in your boots and rack up the miles – make sure you do a boot WOF too, check your tires, so to speak.

Take your daypack out with you -

It’s good to get your body used to the extra weight, especially hips and shoulders, even though it’s only a couple of kilos. Also, make sure your pack is fitted to your body correctly - trust us, it makes a world of difference. We also recommend taking your water bottle, snacks and extra clothing when you go out for any of your own walks.

Practice with your walking poles -

We recommend using poles while you hike as they support your balance and reduce the strain on your joints. Make sure you’re familiar with how to use them and how to maintain, clean and adjust them.

Walk in the rain -

We make the most of every day and the best time to see the rainforest is in the rain, believe it or not - plus it’s a lot of fun! So make sure all your wet weather gear works the way you expect it to. Remember, we also have hot showers at the end of every day, washing/drying machines and we even have a drying room for boots and jackets, so no matter what weather we’re gifted with, we make the most of it. It doesn’t rain all the time, but on the chance that it does, we still want to get you outside to experience all the amazing things we have here.

Learn some basic stretches to avoid niggles and injuries -

Let your body recover between any training walks and try not to push yourself too hard, too soon. And while you’re here, you’ll have optional morning yoga classes to help recover from the previous day and get ready for the next walk. We can also arrange massages at the end of the day for the ultimate unwind!

If you have any questions about how to prepare your getaway, we’re more than happy to help.

We can’t wait to meet you and guide you on this adventure of a lifetime!
